Viticulture and growing season:
The second dry year in a row, clear cold weather in the spring of 2008 tested frost protection systems through out the Napa Valley and caused many grape growers to lose sleep. More than 20 days of wind machines and overhead sprinklers led to an early bud break, followed by a relatively cool summer. Despite these challenges, the Sauvignon Blanc fruit was of exceptional quality. The grapes for this wine were harvested on September 2, 2008
Winemaking:
Napa Valley winemaker Jeff Ames has crafted this Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes were picked at that point of excellent flavors and spicy notes in the juice. The grapes were whole berry pressed and then slowly fermented with special yeasts cultured just for Sauvignon Blanc. After fermentation the wine was aged in 75 gallon stainless steel barrels and yeast-stirred for several months.
Tasting notes:
The 2008 Lieff Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc has the flavors and aromas of the excellent grape growing region in the heart of Napa Valley the Rutherford District. The wine has layers of tropical fruits in the aroma and soft , yet rich, flavor on the palate. The wine will age beautifully for several years.
