Revealing a similar dark ruby/purple color, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Auberge Road offers more earth, licorice, black currant and cherry aromas as well as a more tannic mouthfeel, but a similar personality and richness. The purity of fruit, emerging complexity and overall high quality of both of these Cabernets are exciting. The 2007 should last for 15-20 years.
A new discovery for me, the vineyards planted above Napa's Auberge du Soleil resort are already home to some stars (Sloan and Snowden).

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Auberge Road exhibits wonderful black currant, black cherry and kirsch-like notes intermixed with hints of licorice, cedar and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and pure with good equilibrium, it should be drunk over the next 10-15 years.
A new discovery for me, the vineyards planted above Napa's Auberge du Soleil resort are already home to some stars (Sloan and Snowden).

Wine of the Week
2008 Lieff Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford, Rutherford Crossroad ($25): Wild floral notes of chamomile tea, fresh tarragon, and lemon verbena leap from the glass of this delightful wine from a relatively new producer in Napa Valley. Lees stirring added depth to the mouthfeel, but the wine never saw any wood and was bottled to be consumed fresh and young. It should be superb, however, in another five years!

2005 Lieff "Auberge Road Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford, Napa
Alder Yarrow
There are people who start wineries and work for a long time to get to the point that their names become synonymous with good wine, regardless of whether their names are on the bottle or not. And then there are those who you wonder at how they managed to avoid having their name on a wine bottle for as long as they did.

Lieff Vineyards is a new name in wine in Napa Valley, but it's a familiar name to long times in the business here. Long known as a sponsor of KQED's Perspectives, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein in San Francisco is a world-famous plaintiff's law firm; one that won such landmark cases as the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Microsoft's monopolistic practices, for holocaust victims and against tobacco companies. Robert Lieff was a partner with Melvin Belli before 1972 and he founded his own firm.

The Cellarist, by Jon Bonne
More memorable wines from 2008
There were a whole lot of great wines that didn't make it into my list of top 10 most memorable in 2008, or even the extended list of surprises. When you start with a few thousand wines, trim that to somewhere around 80 and then whittle it down to 10-20, you're bound to leave things out. It's one long game of "Wait, but ... " Here are a few outtakes from the list, wines that blew me away but I didn't quite find a chance to write about. At first I was thinking the laurel for them might be the Terry Malloy Memorial Award, but that's not really the right sentiment. Maybe, to be timely, it should be the Eartha Kitt Award, for being instantly seductive and memorable, no matter what anyone thinks. In any case, these outstanding wines deserve their own bit of year-end cheer.
.....There were a bunch of fantastic Napa Cabs that I didn't quite get a chance to crow about: ...the 2005 Lieff Auberge Road Vineyard (an auspicious second-vintage effort made by Cary Gott)...

Rich and balanced, with a mix of savory herb, dried currant, mineral and sage that are well-proportioned, ending with a complex finish and a touch of toasty oak. Best from 2010 through 2016. 290 cases made. JL

First-time jitters, Oprah sightings at Auction Napa Valley
It's not hard to imagine the butterflies faced by a first-time host at Auction Napa Valley. Just ask Gretchen Lieff.
Lieff and her husband, Robert, showcased their new winery, Lieff Wines, with dinner for a dozen guests Friday at their Rutherford home. Robert Lieff, a prominent San Francisco attorney who describes himself as an early partner in the Far Niente Winery, recalled auctions past and wanted to offer something different.
